The Jews of Hita: A Story Preserved in the Archives
Before 1492, Hita (Guadalajara) was home to a Jewish community whose presence can still be traced through names, documents, and records preserved in historical archives.
This research brings those scattered traces together, allowing the reader to discover some of the people who formed part of Hita’s Jewish community and to explore the documentary evidence they left behind.
Rather than offering only a general history of Sephardic Spain, this study focuses on real names, historical records, and the local history of Hita and the Alcarria, revealing a community through the surviving evidence.
Inside this research you will find:
• Jewish names and medieval spellings preserved in historical documents.
• References to conversos and New Christians.
• Documents and historical sources connected with Hita’s Jewish community.
• Historical context and connections between Hita, Guadalajara, and the Alcarria.
• Historical and genealogical analysis of the evidence uncovered during the research.
This publication is especially intended for readers interested in Sephardic history, Jewish genealogy, medieval Spain, surnames, paleography, and the search for family origins in Spain.
