Inquisition, Families and Hidden Histories in a Castilian Town (1492–1521)

What can three Inquisition trials reveal about an entire Castilian town?

This 16-page historical dossier uncovers the remarkable story of the converso López–Villarreal family and the community surrounding them in Cogolludo after 1492.

Through Inquisition records, family connections and historical sources, the investigation reveals a complex world of New Christians and Old Christians, mixed marriages, merchants, servants, witnesses, debts, rivalries and long-standing conflicts.

At its center is Pedro de Villarreal, formerly Abraham, a converso who became deeply integrated into the economic and political life of Cogolludo before his family came under the scrutiny of the Inquisition.

The dossier also explores connections involving families such as Yague, Simón, Magro and de las Navas, as well as the wider network linking Cogolludo with other communities of the Alcarria.

A true story of conversion, integration, power, conflict and memory—hidden for centuries in the historical record.
