The Jews of the Najari Network: Teruel · Hita · Atienza

A 14-page historical-documentary PDF dossier that follows the traces of a remarkable Jewish network across medieval Aragon and Castile, reconstructing names, families, economic activities, conversions, and patterns of mobility between the 13th and 16th centuries.

The investigation begins with the Najari family of Teruel, one of the most prominent Jewish families documented in the city, connected with credit, royal revenues, economic power, and a family synagogue. From Teruel, the research follows documentary clues toward Hita and Atienza, exploring whether individuals, branches, or economic networks may have moved between Aragon and Castile.

Through historical documentation, specialized scholarship, archival records, prosopography, and onomastic analysis, the dossier brings together figures such as Açach Najari, Saçón Najari, Samuel Najari, Lezar Najari, Zag Najari, Yuçaf de Madrigal, Çag Carrillo, and Abrahín Gormezano/Pedro Núñez, together with converso families and other individuals connected with the Jewish community of Atienza.

A particularly significant episode examined in the dossier is the return of 53 individuals from Atienza who had been baptized in Ciudad Rodrigo during the summer of 1492. Their story reveals the complexity of conversion, return, property, family continuity, and the new identities that emerged after the expulsion.

• A detailed name catalogue of the individuals who form the documentary basis of the investigation.
• Historical sources, methodological notes, and specialized bibliography.

A central feature of this dossier is its commitment to documentary rigor. It carefully distinguishes between documented facts, demonstrated family relationships, onomastic or geographical associations, and research hypotheses. Similar surnames, geographical proximity, or inquisitorial accusations are not automatically presented as evidence of kinship or religious identity.

Rather than studying medieval Jewish communities as isolated settlements, this research proposes another approach: following people—their families, businesses, property, names, and movements across territories.

Teruel, Hita, and Atienza thus emerge as interconnected points within a historical landscape whose traces survive scattered across medieval documents, archives, names, and family networks.

Because borders changed, and names changed too—but networks could continue.
