The Jews of Guadalajara: Names, Documents and Traces of a Sephardic Community
Before the expulsion of 1492, Guadalajara was home to an important Jewish community, deeply connected with the history of the city and the surrounding region of the Alcarria.
Behind this history were real people — men and women whose names, occupations, relationships and experiences can still be traced through surviving historical records.
This research brings together documentary and historical evidence to recover some of those forgotten names and explore the Jewish and converso presence in Guadalajara during a period of profound transformation.
Rather than offering only a general history of Sephardic Spain, this study focuses on individuals, documents and local evidence, bringing the reader closer to the people who formed part of Guadalajara’s Jewish world and to the traces they left behind.
Inside this research you will discover:
• Jewish individuals documented in historical sources connected with Guadalajara and cabalá.
• Medieval Jewish names and the different forms in which they appear in the records.
• Conversos and New Christians documented around the period of 1492.
• Documentary evidence concerning people, families, property and local relationships.
• The historical context of Guadalajara and its connections with other Jewish communities of the Alcarria.
• Documentary and bibliographical sources used in the investigation.
• Historical and genealogical analysis of the surviving evidence.
This publication is especially suited to readers interested in Sephardic history, Jewish genealogy, medieval Spain, surnames, archival research, paleography and the search for family origins in Spain.
